PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Valerie Walls

The new and the old board got together this past month to wrap up the 2002 season and plan for 2003. There will be changes as the year progresses but you can start planning now for some of the activities your BTA has planned.

I want to thank everyone of you for joining the BTA this past year and hope that you will renew your membership for 2003. I have enjoyed being your president and regret I had to withdraw my name for next year.

This past year saw many good things going on in your tennis community.

The 36th Annual Austin Scott Memorial Tennis Tournament was the biggest yet and had more designated levels than ever before. The weather co-operated and we were able to include wheelchair divisions.

The Saturday Morning Drop-in always had good turnouts and many players got to team up with other players of the same ability for other tennis activities.

We had more people in League play than ever before and many teams went on to represent Boulder in playoffs.

Congratulations to the BTA Ladder winners of 2002, Andrus Fejer, Barbara Brockman, and Babs Nelson & Jane Polkinghorne. If you have never played on the Ladder before or haven’t for a few years make that a new year resolution. It is a lot of fun.

The Ned Crow had a small turnout this year. I encourage those of you who would like to try tournament play to enter that. It was the first open tournament I ever played in. I didn’t win but it gave me enough courage to enter other tournaments which I haven’t won either. I guess some of us are just meant to fulfill the role of warm-up opponents to the rest of you. I get neat T-shirts and little gifts though.

Valmont Park Tennis Center has past its first hurdle. Jim Swiggart now has a letter of interest from the Parks & Rec Department so now he can move forward in trying to establish where in the park and how many courts. We keep telling the Department that bigger is better but they seem to be stuck in “pocket park” mode. That will change.

Our website keeps on getting better and better. Using the “message board” is a good way for players looking to play on a league or captains looking to form a team to reach each other or for individuals to make contact.

2002 was great, 2003 will be even better because you have an enthusiastic President in Jeff Carroll. Look for wonderful things to happen.

PEACE AND JOY IN 2003!

LEAGUE REPORT

CHAIRPERSON: Sylvia Henderson

The BTA had league season full of growth, championships, busy courts, and, hopefully, a lot of fun for all who participated.  This season BTA participation resulted in an increase from 15th in 2001 to 13th in 2002 in Colorado in numbers of participants on league teams.  Thank you, everyone who participated in league play and thank you, BTA, for sponsoring league play in Boulder.

In preparation for the 2003 league season, please be aware that NTRP ratings are projected for an earlier release than in previous seasons.  As a result, teams will be forming early this season.  Our teams are self-forming, captain-driven, and registered on a first-paid, first-registered basis, based on court availability.  League participation across the state is increasing and the BTA expects increased interest as well.  We foster team formation by maintaining lists of interested players and sharing names and phone numbers with other interested players.  The rest is up to you!  The BTA does not form teams, but we will help you get in touch with other people interested in forming teams and give you informational and educational support as your teams form and then we’ll register your team with the Colorado Tennis Association.

Returning league players, check the December/January edition of “Colorado Tennis” for the 2003 schedules, rules changes, and format changes.  There are some major ones including the introduction of Dynamic NTRP Ratings this season.  This will be an exciting year!

Questions?  Please call Sylvia Henderson @ 303-651-1292.

HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

INCIDENTAL NOTES

Saturday Morning Drop In

This fun activity will continue on an informal basis. Dan Lowry did a phenomenal job this past season and everyone who came seemed to enjoy themselves. Bring your own balls as the last of the BTA  case was used for the Charity and Recycle tournament. Perhaps some of you who have joined in a number of times will undertake to do the mixing up of players. People do like to move around partners. Don’t be shy.

HISTORY OF THE

BOULDER TENNIS ASSOCIATION

The Boulder Tennis Association (BTA) was established in 1967 by a group of local tennis enthusiasts who wanted to offer social and competitive play of all levels to tennis players.  Over the years, the BTA has been responsible for many important and well-attended tennis functions and has supported the City of Boulder in promoting tennis opportunities.

USTA AFFLIATION

The BTA operates as a nonprofit 501(c)7 organization.  We are an Organizational Member of the United State Tennis Association, the Intermountain Tennis Association, and the Colorado Tennis Association.  However, membership in the BTA does not include membership in the USTA.  You will still need to join the USTA directly if you are interested.

WHAT BTA OFFERS YOU

The BTA will sponsor the following tennis activities in the coming season.  Check your BTA Newsletter or the BTA web site for exact dates and times:

·         The Icebreaker: May 10 or 17, 9am-noon. Saturday morning, offering social, get-acquainted play.

·         37th Annual Austin Scott Memorial Tournament: April 26 – May 4. Our most prestigious and largest tournament held at the CU Kitteredge courts.

·         Ned Crow Tournament: August 8 – 10. Named after one of our founders, this event is competitive and for everyone.

·         Recycle Charity Tournament: October 4. An end-of-the-season event with proceeds supporting a community charity.

Competitive League Play

Women’s Daytime Doubles

Men’s and Women’s Adult Leagues

Men’s and Women’s Senior Leagues

Women’s Daytime Singles

Mixed Doubles Leagues

Twilight League

See the BTA 2003 League Brochure for details.

Ladder Play

Over 50% of BTA members play on a ladder.  The ladders provide an opportunity for you to challenge on and play within your skill level.  It’s a great way to meet members and improve your game.

Drop-In Tennis

Each Saturday morning beginning in early May and running through late September, members are welcome to “drop-in” to our reserved courts and informally play doubles from 8:00 am to 11:00 am.  You come when you want and play as long as you like.  We provide the balls.  This is a most popular event.

Monthly Newsletter

During the months of February through November, and once during the winter, we distribute an informative newsletter, letting our members know what upcoming events are planned.

Membership Directory

You will receive a listing of all BTA members.  Included in the directory is information regarding level of play and availability.

Tennis Socials

We will sponsor social events offering an evening of conversation, refreshments, and tennis if the membership so desires.

www.bouldertennis.org

Our expanding website offers information on all that we do plus keeping members abreast of what is happening on a timely basis.
