PRESIDENT’S LETTER Valerie Walls As you read this I will
have just returned from a national USTA conference in Destin, Florida.
This workshop is to help community tennis groups to meet and promote the
needs of their community. I hope to incorporate the ideas learned to
improve the BTA. It seems that the needs of the BTA have changed and
increased over the years. We have tried hard to adapt to them. League play has increased and Ladder
play has decreased. The BTA’s Austin Scott Memorial Tournament is
receiving more sanctions at designated levels and the local BTA
tournaments are experiencing less players. Saturday Morning Drop-In is
holding its own. (Continued on page 2) President: Valerie Walls Past President: Tracy Edmunds Vice President: Mary Prassa Secretary: Yeida Chang Treasurer: Mary Anderson Sylvia Henderson Armando Gingras Mona Tell Alei Burns Greg Withers John Riggle JUDSON G. MCCORMICK, JR. 1949 - 2002 Judson
McCormick passed away quietly during the early morning of January 4,
2002. He was 52. A very active member of the BTA, Jud
served on its Board and captained five league teams last season, the most
anyone in the BTA has ever done. On
Saturday morning, January 19, a group of more than 30 of his friends met
at the CU courts to remember him. He was buried with military honors at Ft
.Logan National Cemetery, January 25. Jud
had a voracious, searching intellect and he leaves the Boulder tennis
community poorer in spirit by his passing. Thank
you, Jud, and goodbye. Phone: 303-442-4BTA Internet: www.bouldertennis.com Mail: P.O. Box 912 Boulder CO

HOW TO REACH THE BTA
FEBRUARY 2002
WELCOME TO LEAGUE
SEASON 2002!
Enclosed with this newsletter, is the 2002 BTA League Brochure. There are several format and schedule changes, so check the brochure, the January BTA Newsletter, and the Dec./Jan. issue of Colorado Tennis to update yourself on these changes.
As you eagerly await the publication of the 2001 NTRP Ratings in the February issue of Colorado Tennis (due to arrive in your mailbox any day now), a couple of reminders are in order. 1) You may appeal your rating. The information on and deadline for receipt of appeal applications are in the February Colorado Tennis, also. 2) You may play at or above your published rating, but not below. 3) If you only play on a mixed doubles team and do not play in sanctioned tournaments, you must be re-rated by a certified verifier each year.
If you do not have a published rating and wish to play league tennis, you must obtain a visual rating from a certified verifier. The BTA will again sponsor an NTRP Rating Clinic on April 6 at the South Boulder Recreation Center. Call Armando Gingras at 303-541-1018 for a reservation at this clinic or call the Pro Shop of area tennis clubs for other rating possibilities: Harvest House Sporting Assn. @ 303-449-5033; Ranch Country Club @ 303-469-5372; or Longmont Athletic Club @ 303-772-4700.
To play league tennis, you must also be a member of the USTA and may join @ $25/year, by calling 1-800-990-USTA or on the Internet at www.usta.com.
League registration begins March 1, with deadlines for forming the USA Combined Mixed Doubles team, March 28 and the USA Adult Division, April 6. Teams will be given choice of home courts in the order in which all league fees and BTA membership fees are received. If you want more information about playing league tennis for the BTA than you find in the above-mentioned publications, call Sylvia Henderson at 303-651-1292.
WE ARE PROUD TO WELCOME ELAINE HARRIS
AS A NEW BTA LEAGUE COORDINATOR FOR 2002!
PRESIDENT’S LETTER Continued from page 1
An area that is growing is the Juniors and the BTA has nothing for them. At one time we had an active group and it would be nice to see that again. I’ll have attended some of the workshops that address Junior tennis and will help anyone who would like to see activity in that area.
P-TAC (Public Tennis Action Committee) is still active in moving forward on the Tennis Complex proposal for Valmont Park. Jim Swiggart had architectural drawings done for 3 different scenarios and if approved Boulder is going to have a mighty fine tennis facility that will be open for the public. I attended the Parks and Recreation Open House and wrote notes at each of the stations in support of the complex. At some point YOU are gong to be asked to appear at either or both meetings of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the City Council to show strength in numbers.
I hope you are taking advantage of the balmy weather between the bouts of winter and enjoying the benefits of winter tennis in Boulder. Jud did.
INCIDENTAL NOTES
36TH ANNUAL
AUSTIN SCOTT TOURNAMENT
April 27- May 5, 2002
Congratulations to Gary Goff. He has run such a good tournament for the BTA that it is now designated 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5. In past years there have been about 330 players. This year we expect more players and the spectators should see some challenging matches.
If you are looking for a way to promote your business to the tennis community... here is a fantastic opportunity!
We will be adding local sponsors to this year’s 36th Annual Austin Scott Tennis Tournament. This growing tournament is held the week of April 27th through May 5th at the CU tennis courts. Last year the tournament drew about 350 players (and even more spectators). This year that is expected to increase with the addition of more designated events.
There will be one business selected as the main anchor sponsor, which requires a minimum investment of $1,000. Also there are supporting sponsorships, which still allow great exposure for only $100.
This is a positive and unique way to market 303 your business, products and services to your fellow players! (Plus it could be a nice tax deduction!)
E-mail Tracy @ edmundstracy@hotmail.com
or call -442-4BTA to get the details!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Are you able to help out on any of the committees? Help fill in the empty spaces.
Please call the BTA to give your time. “ If everyone does a little, everyone gets a lot!”
City Officials Contacts: This will be most valuable when the Valmont Park Tennis Center needs to be approved.
Tournament Directors: Have you ever wanted to run a small friendly tournament for about 60 people or less? We need volunteers to run the Icebreaker, Ned Crow Tournament and the Recycle Charity Tournament. These are fun tournaments. Gary Goff is again running the Austin Scott.
MEMBERSHIP
The January Newsletter contained the
membership application for 2002. Have you returned yours yet? It is due by May
31.
A membership booklet
will be published in the Spring listing names, telephone numbers and NTRP
ratings or your own best estimate if you are not rated.
Extra membership brochures are available at
Boulder Recreation Centers, East and South as well as at Rocky Mountain Racquet
Specialists, 2425 Canyon Street.
The BTA operates as a
nonprofit organization. We are an
Organizational Member of the United State Tennis Association, the Intermountain
Tennis Association, and the Colorado Tennis Association. However, membership in the BTA does not
include membership in the USTA. You
will still need to join the USTA directly if you are interested.
