PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Valerie Walls

We are getting off to a running start because there are so many exciting events in which the BTA is involved.

Be sure to fill out the 2002 Membership Brochure enclosed with this Newsletter and  be sure to mark some of the Volunteer boxes!

Four of the Board members took part in a workshop put on by the CTA (Colorado Tennis Association) under the auspices of the USTA. It was to help Community Tennis Associations (also referred to as CTAs !?) promote tennis through tournaments and other events.

The USTA Leagues are undergoing changes to encourage more participation and to simplify the processes. (See the report elsewhere in this newsletter.)

The indoor tennis facility in Valmont Park looks more and more promising. The BTA is still very much involved.

The BTA is becoming more involved with the expanding sport of Wheelchair Tennis. Last year a scholarship was given to a Boulder resident to attend the National Camp at CU. This year a wheelchair division is being added to the Austin Scott.

Phyllis Lockwood, an active, early BTA member, was one of the first inductees into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame. She was very positive in promoting Junior tennis and it would be great to renew the Junior Tournament that bears her name in our yearly activities. We can add that to those already mentioned, as well as the

LEAGUE NOTES

CHAIRPERSON: Sylvia Henderson

EXCITING NEW CHANGE

IN LEAGUE FORMATS FOR 2002:

The December 2001/January 2002 issue of Colorado Tennis contains important information about format changes, schedule changes and policy changes for the 2002 league season on pages 2c and 3c.  Save these pages for reference in planning for the upcoming league season.  Here are some of the changes:

START PLANNING NOW FOR LEAGUE SEASON 2002:

The 2002 Rating Clinic is in the planning stages and will be organized by Armando Gingras this year.  Look for more information in our next newsletter.

It’s time to start planning for league team formation, although the new NTRP ratings will probably not be published until early February, as in previous years.  As you begin to think about league season, keep a few things in mind:

We look forward to an exciting 2002 league season and hope YOU will join us!

Icebreaker Tournament, Saturday Morning Drop-In, the BTA Ladder, the Ned Crow Tournament, the Rating Clinic, and the Charity and Recycle Tournament, which are held every year.

Because the BTA is now registered with the IRS as a nonprofit organization [501(c)(7)] we depend on the membership to help in all the activities. We encourage you to accept an assignment when asked and to offer help when you see a need.

Any member of the BTA is welcome at the Board Meetings. You will see changes in the year to come and we welcome your input.

INCIDENTAL NOTES

HISTORY OF THE

BOULDER TENNIS ASSOCIATION

The Boulder Tennis Association (BTA) was established in 1967 by a group of local tennis enthusiasts who wanted to offer social and competitive play at all levels to tennis players.  Over the years, the BTA has been responsible for many important and well attended tennis functions and has supported the City of Boulder in promoting and expanding tennis opportunities.

WHY JOIN THE BTA?

The BTA sponsors the following tennis activities.  Check the BTA newsletters or the BTA web site for exact dates and times:

·         The Icebreaker: held on an early spring Saturday morning, offering social, get-acquainted play.

·         36th Annual Austin Scott Memorial Tournament: Our most prestigious and largest tournament.

·         Ned Crow Tournament: Named after one of our founders, this event occurs in late summer.

·         Recycle Charity Tournament: An end-of-the-season event with proceeds supporting a community charity.

·         Ladder Play: This provides an opportunity for you to challenge on and play within your skill level.  It’s a great way to meet members and improve your game.

·         Competitive League Play: A way to compete against other tennis clubs. The BTA 2002 League Brochure will be included in the next Newsletter.

·         Drop-in Tennis: Come on Saturdays to our reserved courts and informally play doubles from 8:00 am to 11:00 am.  You come when you want and play as long as you like.  Another way to meet members and find players of your level.

·         Monthly Newsletter: Every month during the tennis season and occasionally during the winter, we distribute an informative newsletter, letting our members know what upcoming events are planned.

·         Membership Directory: You will receive a listing of all BTA members.  Included in the directory is information regarding level of play and time preference.

USTA AFFLIATION

The BTA operates as a nonprofit organization.  We are an Organizational Member of the United State Tennis Association, the Intermountain Tennis Association, and the Colorado Tennis Association.  However, membership in the BTA does not include membership in the USTA.  You will still need to join the USTA directly if you are interested.

36TH ANNUAL

 AUSTIN SCOTT TOURNAMENT

Changes are being made to the Austin Scott. See the Tournament Schedule – Player Handbook 2002 published by the Intermountain Section (available soon.) Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing segments in tennis. Players in the area are encouraged to play in the regular tournament and the final weekend will feature a competition just for chair players.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Are you able to help out in any the following areas? Please call the BTA to give your time. “ If everyone does a little, everyone gets a lot!”

City Officials Contacts: This will be most valuable when the Valmont Park Tennis Center needs to be approved.

Tournament Directors: Have you ever wanted to run a small friendly tournament for about 60 people or less? We need volunteers to run the Icebreaker, Ned Crow Tournament and the Recycle Charity Tournament. These are fun tournaments. Gary Goff is again running the Austin Scott.
