PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Valerie Walls

An Association with no Home

Not only do we have no home we do not have anyone who runs it. “Wait a minute,” you are thinking, “we have a Board consisting of the people in the column to the left. Of course we have someone who runs it.”

What I mean is that every single task is done by a volunteer. There is no one person who is paid to take care of putting it all together. There is no one place where the myriad details are compiled so that if a problem arises the documents can be looked at as a whole. Our documents are spread out over at least 10 different computers that are not linked. Every single event, league and function is on a different computer and behind each computer is a volunteer who cares deeply about the BTA. Unfortunately these wonderful volunteers get overwhelmed and sometimes burn out pretty quickly, but they hang in there because they do care. They realize the importance of having an affordable community tennis association that provides quality services to their members.

Our Association has grown incredibly and our services have expanded, but in looking over the past few years’ records I see the same names doing many tasks in the same year. No wonder I see very few past Board members still on our membership roll. In the next few months as you participate in the various activities ask yourself, “What have I given back to the BTA?” If the answer is, “Nothing,” think about changing that as soon as possible.

OK. Enough of that, on to the good stuff.

League play is in full swing and we have some winners!

Talking about swinging, come join the swinging Saturday morning group at Centennial. 8 –11 am. See inside.

The Ned Crow Tournament, open to all, is a great way for first time tournament players to get their feet wet. An application is enclosed.

Diane Bohan is working on ideas for the Adult/Child day of tennis fun. She is looking for both tennis playing kids without a tennis adult and tennis playing adults without a tennis kid. She will match you up. Also people with ideas and volunteers to help run the event to take place late August or early September should call Diane at 303-499-5571.

Valmont is progressing and will be needed more than ever since the controversy about the CU courts has become like a tennis ball being volleyed between the City and the County. Going to the meetings about the courts leaves me dizzy. But Valmont……aahhhhh. It is looking good.

Kudos to Kjersten Buzek of the Boulder Parks & Rec. She is making sure our public courts are being maintained (check out Martin Park!) and reserved when necessary.

Send me your tennis gossip.  newsletter@bouldertennis.org

I hope you are having a great tennis summer!

BTA  LADDERS 2002

CHAIRPERSON: Greg Withers

New to the BTA? Want to meet people? As the ladder chairman and a long time ladder member, I naturally think the ladders are a great way to play tennis --- meet new tennis friends, reestablish old relationships, and practice for tournaments and leagues all in a competitive, but friendly environment.

Currently, the BTA has only three ladders, men's singles, women's singles and women's doubles, but we would gladly sponsor more, e.g., men's doubles or senior singles, if there is any interest.

Good luck with all your matches, whether they are on the ladder or not.

LEAGUE REPORT

CHAIRPERSON: Sylvia Henderson

COURT ETIQUETTE FOR LEAGUE PLAY

Because of recent complaints here are a few suggestions to keep harmony on the courts.

1.       Scheduled  League Matches take precedence over make-up matches.

2.       Scheduled League Matches going into overtime take precedence over the next scheduled League Match.

3.       Be courteous. If a Match is going on beside or behind you talk quietly and enter or leave the courts between games (not points) unless the players on that court indicate otherwise.

CONGRATULATIONS to Mara Frazier’s 3.5 USA Combined Mixed Doubles Team for winning the Local Division and advancing to District Playoffs.  In an extremely close match on Saturday, June 22, they lost 1-2.  WE’RE PROUD OF YOU 3.5’S!!

About Ned Crow

Ned Crow, 86, was the Chairman of the committee that founded the Boulder Tennis Association in 1967 and was an active member and leader of the organization until recently.  A retired statistician from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Boulder Laboratories, Ned has been a nationally ranked player since 1976, and has been ranked highly nationally in Men’s 80-and-over singles and in doubles.  In the State of Colorado, Ned has recently ranked 2nd in 80s singles and 1st in doubles.  He was named the Penn 1998 Player of the Year (Men’s 80).  Please join Ned and the BTA in the 18th annual Ned Crow Tournament.

The Boulder Tennis Association was established by a group of local tennis enthusiasts who wanted to offer social and competitive play for all levels of tennis players.  They also wanted to work with the City of Boulder to promote tennis opportunities including tennis court construction, tennis lessons, tennis leagues, tennis ladders, tennis tournaments, and regular drop-in play.  For more information, please contact 303-442-4BTA, www.bouldertennis.org, or Boulder Tennis Association, P.O. Box 912, Boulder, CO 80304
