PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Valerie Walls

The 36th Annual Austin Scott Memorial Tennis Tournament finished on time and with many compliments from the participants. The weather was very cooperative this year.  Results are inside. Gary Larsen took some great pictures which I have tried to incorporate. Thanks Gary.

The weatherman has smiled on most of the BTA tennis events, the League Plays (except those on Thursday evenings,) the Icebreaker and the Saturday Morning Drop-in. Come and join us any Saturday from 8am on.

Diane Bohan is interested in starting a competition event that could include Mother/Son, Father/Daughter or Adult/Child. Anyone who would like to help her please call 303-499-5571.

Trying to build competition quality courts, both in numbers and facilities is becoming a full time commitment. Valmont is progressing. The replacement courts for CU have come under fire from groups who are concerned about flood plain and other environmental issues. By the time this newsletter arrives in your mailbox the County Commissioners will have voted whether or not to go ahead with allowing the courts to be built. I’ll have attended the meeting on May 30.

This Newsletter is full of information; Membership list, Austin Scott results and all of our on going activities. Get out there and enjoy!

LEAGUE REPORT

CHAIRPERSON: Sylvia Henderson

Greetings, BTA members!  One half of the leagues for 2002 have been registered!  League participation is up so far this year with more teams and more players.  Thank you, League Coordinators, Team Captains, and League Players for such a smooth start to League Season 2002.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER TO ALL BTA MEMBERS:

The following courts will be reserved for league play on various mornings and evenings throughout the summer and fall:

Fairview High School

Centennial Middle School

Burbank Middle School

IBM courts

Please look for the City of Boulder reservation signs and respect these reservations.  However, lack of a sign does not mean the court is unreserved.  Sometimes signs get removed or blown away in our windy city.  Cooperation between fellow BTA members and BTA league players is greatly appreciated.

BTA MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the BTA allows you to play on the Ladder, in our Leagues, and other activities. You will receive the monthly newsletter keeping you up to date on what is happening in the tennis community.

Your membership is for the calendar year, no matter when you join.

Extra membership brochures are available at Boulder Recreation Centers, East and South as well as at Rocky Mountain Racquet Specialists, 2425 Canyon Street and on our website.

USTA AFFLIATION

The BTA operates as a nonprofit organization.  We are an Organizational Member of the United State Tennis Association, the Intermountain Tennis Association, and the Colorado Tennis Association.  However, membership in the BTA does not include membership in the USTA.  You will still need to join the USTA directly if you are interested.

SATURDAY MORNING DROP-IN

Join us at Centennial Courts most Saturdays from 8am for a fun social and competitive mixer. Come as early as you want and join anyone on the courts (5-8). About  9am you will be called in to sign in and get a partner to play a set. About 45 minutes later you will get a new partner and this will continue as long as people want to play. Of course there will be time to knosh and schmooze.

Thank you to Dan Lawry who is chairing this on going activity assisted by Toby Block, Ann Kauffman, Tim Schwadon and Mary Ann Strobridge.

ICEBREAKER

Mary Prassa ran such a fun-filled event on Saturday, May 11, that no one wanted to keep score. So congratulations to all who played. Volunteer extrodinaire, Armando Gingras, supplied the refreshments and manned the table.

CONGRATULATIONS, SCOTT !!!

Scott Davidoff, CU men’s tennis head coach, was named Region V Coach of the Year. Scott has always been very supportive of the BTA by making sure the Kittredge CU courts are available for our various activities. He praised the CU players and assistant coaches, Nick Quatrochi and Larry Kirkman.

BTA  LADDERS 2002

CHAIRPERSON: Greg Withers

The new tennis season is in full swing and the BTA ladders have begun.  As the ladder chairman and a long time ladder member, I naturally think the ladders are a great way to play tennis --- meet new tennis friends, reestablish old relationships, and practice for tournaments and leagues all in a competitive, but friendly environment.

Currently, the BTA has only three ladders, men's singles, women's singles and women's doubles, but we would gladly sponsor more, e.g., men's doubles or senior singles, if there is any interest.

Good luck with all your matches, whether they are on the ladder or not.

36th Annual Austin Scott Memorial Tournament

CHAIRPERSON: Tracy Edmunds  DIRECTOR: Gary Goff

This year’s tournament was a fantastic week of tennis with over 400 players!

The increase from previous years can be attributed to the following reasons:

First of all, a big thank you to all the players!  You all had such positive, fun attitudes that really made running this tournament a pleasure.

Play started on Saturday April 27th with the bulk of the matches played over the course of this 1st weekend.  Matches continued throughout the week with a little bit of juggling due to rain.  The finals were held on Saturday May 4th with beautiful weather.

The bulk of the matches were played at the CU courts, however due to the size of the tournament this year, we did have to use off-site courts to keep the tournament running smoothly and on time. Hopefully in the next couple years, we will have larger tennis facility to run this growing tournament that will feature indoor & lighted courts (possibly Valmont!)

Once again, our tournament director Gary Goff did a tremendous job running this event!  Witnessing the “behind the scenes” of the tournament really makes you appreciate all the hard work & time that is required to run a tournament of this size and be able to accommodate the players’ schedules.

A BIG Thank You To Our 2002 Austin Scott Sponsors!
