PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Valerie Walls

The beautiful fall (with some rain) has one wearing summer clothing one day and bundling up the next. It doesn’t stop the tennis though. We are an adaptable group.

I have been having fun on the online BTA message board. Questions and comments come in and eventually get answered. This is a great way to get messages out.

We are looking for a few good people to be sure the BTA continues to function. It is a terrific organization that is growing. Fill out the volunteer form from last month and send it in. Some people who have sent in their interest sheet have already been contacted to get a jump on next year.

Thanks to the members who send pictures and news to newsletter@bouldertennis.org

I would appreciate hearing from any of you who would like to help organize the Annual Meeting/Party. We need a place that will hold 30-50 people. E-mail me at the newsletter or call 303-443-4121.

Armando Gingras is running the informal, fun Annual Recycle Charity Tournament and I hope to either help or assist or sit and cheer. Bring a deck chair, your check for $10 dollars (optional for spectators) and your enthusiasm. We hope to see lots of you there. More details inside.

2002 BTA LEAGUE STATS

In the 8 USA, CTA, AND ITA Leagues in Colorado, the BTA sponsored 53 teams, involving 485 players.  We had 8 more teams than 2001 and 81 more participants.  The BTA league participation is growing each year at an exciting rate.  League tennis is growing statewide in Colorado as well, which will mean better competition and more exciting playoffs.  Our thanks goes to all who make league play possible for BTA:  team players, team captains, league coordinators, BTA Board members and the City of Boulder for our close partnership, which allows us to be league sponsors.  A special thanks goes to Kjersten Buzek, who directs the City of Boulder’s tennis programs, for her support of our BTA League Tennis programming.

FEEDBACK NEEDED ON THE LEAGUE FORMAT CHANGES THAT WERE IMPLEMENTED FOR 2002

In preparation for setting policy and formats and schedules for the 2003 league season, the CTA would like feedback on the 2002 league season and the changes that were implemented:

  1. The tournament-style round robin playoffs for CTA Daytime Doubles and CTA Twilight League used for the entire state playoffs.
  2. The third set match tiebreak used in CTA Super Seniors and ITA Fall Mixed Doubles.
  3. The new format for CTA Twilight League utilizing 2 singles/1 doubles matches.
  4. Any other feedback you have to offer.

Please get your input to Sylvia Henderson @ 303-651-1292 and it will be presented for CTA’s consideration as they set policy for 2003.

Many exciting changes have happened and others are in the planning stages.  We hope the changes will enhance league tennis in Colorado and make for a more enjoyable time on the courts for people playing in leagues throughout the state.

INCIDENTAL NOTES

Annual BTA Recycle Charity Tournament

Armando Gingras 303-541-1018

This fun tournament will be held on Saturday morning, October 19, at our Centennial Middle School courts.  (Raindate will be Sunday, October 20).  It will run from 9:00 am to noon.  Arrive a few minutes early to register so that round-robin doubles play can begin promptly at 9:00.

This year the tournament will benefit Boulder’s Emergency Family Assistance agency.  All proceeds will go the EFA.  The “entry fee” is $10 in the form of a check made out to EFA.

Please bring a “trophy” to exchange.  This can be an actual trophy, a bottle of wine, a piece of art, or even a “pink elephant.”  While this is an informal social tourney, there is a traveling trophy on which the best player’s name is permanent inscribed.

Courts, balls, and food will be provided by the BTA.  We encourage everyone to come to play and support this worthy event. Call if you have questions, or to pre-register.

BTA Annual Elections and Party

This will take place on Friday, November 8 from 6pm to about 9pm. We will have more details in the next newsletter.
