PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Valerie Walls

I know we are more than half way through a beautiful September and you are just now getting your newsletter. That’s what happens when one person wears two hats. Oh well, we carry on as best we can.

I just returned from a terrific vacation with my family in Canada. It is fun to catch up with them and my “tennis buddies” in the “far north.” I hadn’t been to Ontario for two years. It was time.

Speaking of “tennis buddies” I hear lots of good things that happen to people who are BTA members. The BTA League team members have again done themselves proud. Many got to state playoffs and four BTA members made it to the National Finals in Las Vegas. People have met through the BTA and found time to play recreationally as well as competitively.

The enthusiasm expressed by new members for what the BTA offers, is equaled only by members willing to undertake starting new programs and new tasks. Some of the new ideas put forth take a longer incubation period than expected but your Board listens carefully and encourages most endeavours.

The organized tennis season is winding down but your Board does not. It is gearing up for the coming 2003 season now. The most important help you can be is to fill out the enclosed Nomination Form. Either volunteer yourself or nominate someone else and return it to the BTA by October 31. Elections will be held in November. All the BTA members need your support.

This has been an interesting year for me. Time filled to overflowing. I probably played too much tennis, if there is such a thing. But I enjoyed all aspects of the tennis, the recreation, the competition (apologies to my various partners who carried me through many a game,) the spectator (live and on TV) and the sociability that pervaded it all. Aside from tennis , I sold my home, downsized, and kept up with my church activities as well as squeezing in some wonderful trips. Life is good!

LEAGUE REPORT

CHAIRPERSON: Sylvia Henderson

STATE CHAMPIONS!

Congratulations go to the AWESOME BTA DAYTIME DOUBLES TEAM, CAPTAINED BY RUTH BOLLES, FOR WINNING THE CTA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in a decisive victory over a fellow Boulder team from The Harvest House!  The BTA is proud of you ladies for your great playing and winning this season!

BTA PLAYOFF PARTICIPANTS!

The BTA had representation in the USA ADULT DIVISION STATE PLAYOFFS from two women’s teams:

3.0 WOMEN – BTA BLUE:  Elaine Harris, Captain

This excellent team made it to the semifinals with a great record!

4.0 WOMEN – BTA BLUE:  Yeida Chang, Captain

Congratulations, ladies, for your excellent representation of BTA at State Playoffs!

League season is almost finished for 2002 and The BTA extends a huge THANK YOU to all captains, team players, and league coordinators for a smoothly organized league season.  We hope you have had a fun season and are starting to plan and organize your teams for 2003.  The season starts sooner than we expect.

In preparation for 2003, be aware that the NTRP Rating system will convert nationally to a Dynamic Rating System.  We do not have all the details on the rules that will govern the new system, but we want you to be aware of two important aspects. New players, without a current computer rating, will be required to do a self-rating and there will be a disqualification system in place to prevent players from playing at an NTRP level below their skill level.  The USTA will provide further details in the upcoming months, hopefully in a timely manner to facilitate league team formation for 2003.

INCIDENTAL NOTES

NED CROW RESULTS

John Riggle

First place in the women's doubles went to Mary and Lisa Ballenger of Louisville; second place to Joan Nagel and Jane Hailey.

First place in men's singles went to Pedro Santabarbara, and second to Alex Goldstein.  These were the only two events because of the low number of registrations for the other offered events.

Despite the low turn-out, all who played said they enjoyed themselves and looked forward to some social tennis events through BTA this autumn.

My very deep personal thanks to Valerie for stepping up at the 11th hour to bring the refreshments AND the tennis balls.

3.0 BTA LEAGUE LADIES

Susan Gallo

303-582-9407

Any women who played at the 3.0 level are invited to participate in an  End of Season Round Robin, Saturday, October 12 from 1-4 pm at Centennial Middle School Courts. Space is limited so get your entry in ASAP or phone Susan to register. Cost is $7 per person. Please register by October 9.

This just a social event with balls and refreshments provided and PRIZES!

If you would like to help, but not play, call also. If you just want to watch and socialize, bring a chair, and welcome.

THE RECYCLE CHARITY TOURNAMENT

This sort of got forgotten for this newsletter. October’s newsletter will have more specific information. Probably look for it to be played a Saturday in late October.

NOMINATION AND VOLUNTEER SHEET

Here is a list of some of the Positions and Activities offered by the Boulder Tennis Association.

Under each description is a place for you to put a name, either yours, or someone you know would be willing to do the job. If there is no space for a name it is because that is an appointed position. If you would like to help in a certain activity put “help” beside your name. You can help in as many activities as you want!

Fold the sheet, close it at the top, stamp it, and return it to the BTA.
